U.S. Citizenship Eligibility Checklist
Most applicants must meet these baseline federal requirements to qualify for naturalization:
Age: You must be at least 18 years old at the time of filing.
Permanent Residency: You must hold a Green Card for at least 5 years (or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen).
Continuous Residence: You must live in the U.S. without leaving for a single trip lasting 6 months or longer.
Physical Presence: You must be physically present inside the U.S. for at least 30 months out of the last 5 years (or 18 months out of 3 years if married to a citizen).
Local Residency: You must live in your specific state or USCIS district for at least 3 months before applying.
Good Moral Character: You must show a clean record, including filing taxes accurately and disclosing any legal or criminal history.
English & Civics: You must be able to read, write, and speak basic English, and pass a test on basic U.S. history and government.
